Majority Rules is Now Just 30 Minutes—and Alaska’s Democracy Experiment Still Inspires

When Alaska became the first state to eliminate party primaries and let voters rank candidates in the general election, it wasn’t just a bold policy change—it was a breakthrough for American democracy.

Majority Rules, a documentary film that follows this transformation, captured how a diverse coalition of Alaskans came together to make history. A new 30-minute educational cut premiered on May 14 at the American Democracy Summit, making the story even more accessible for schools, campuses, social media, and public screenings.

The film is designed to inspire and inform. It shows how a broad, bipartisan coalition can create a more representative system—and how reforms can empower voters to hold leaders accountable.

In 2022, a greater percentage of voters in Alaska cast meaningful votes in competitive, consequential races than in any other state in the country.

The new educational cut of Majority Rules doesn’t just revisit the past—it points to what’s possible in the future. At a time when confidence in democracy is near historic lows, Alaska’s story offers a hopeful, concrete example of how structural reform can lead to better representation and greater accountability.

There is more to come. A new, updated feature-length version of the film is coming this fall, incorporating recent wins for reform and continuing the story beyond 2024. The updated film will be available on all streaming platforms just after Labor Day.

To support the new release, we’re also launching the next phase of our impact campaign to broaden the reach of the film and spark even more conversation. We’re expanding our outreach to students and educators, strengthening partnerships, and refreshing our screening tools and online resources to make it easier than ever to bring the film to new audiences.

Whether you're a student, teacher, policymaker, or engaged citizen, the film is a tool for learning, sharing, and sparking action. We encourage you to use it, talk about it, and help expand the conversation.
