Worst Kept Secret In Washington

Earlier this week President Obama delivered his final State Of The Union.  His speech touched on the successes and shortcomings his administration has had on issues ranging from national security to the economy. However, the President said that one of his biggest regrets was “that the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better.”

The President argued that there are good people “who would like to see more cooperation, a more elevated debate in Washington, but feel trapped by the imperatives of getting elected, by the noise coming out of your base...It's the worst kept secret in Washington."

This was evident during the GOP debate last night as candidates sprinted to the right and walked back some of their previous positions that were less appealing to a conservative electorate.

I’m not saying that Democratic candidates don’t pander to their base during these debates. They do. It just so happens that most of the Democratic debates have been scheduled on the weekends therefore not as many people watch them (the next Democratic debate is this Sunday at 9pm ET on NBC, in case you didn’t already have plans for your three day weekend).

With our elected officials speaking to the concerns of a vocal minority, rather than the silent majority, it is easy to see why the voter frustration and disapproval of Congress is at an all time high. It is clear that American’s are looking for something different.

Last week The Centrist Project released the results of a survey we commissioned to better understand the voters in Missouri and the numbers are staggering! Although only 19.8% of Missouri voters identify as an Independent, 35% of all Missourians would likely support an independent candidate for U.S Senate in 2016. That means that even some Democrats and Republicans are ready to buck their party and vote to send an independent to Washington.

The cracks are forming in the dam the parties have built. Very soon we can expect to see a flood of independents that finally break through the partisan gridlock and make their voices heard. This is another one of the worst kept secrets in Washington.
