Shawn Butler, AK HD 29

Shawn Butler is a retired Lt. Colonel Army officer and received her Ph.D. in Computer Science. She has been an Alaskan resident since 1991 and currently works at the University of Alaska in the Computer Science Department.

After Shawn Butler served in the military for 20 years, she received her Ph.D. in Computer Science, started an IT consulting business, worked as a Senior Project Manager, and taught at the University of Alaska in the Computer Science Department. Additionally, she has served on the Kenai Borough’s Hope/Sunrise Advisory Planning Commission and as the president of the Anchorage Women’s Hockey League.

Butler is running as an independent because the state and leaders in it must put aside partisan obstructionism in order to solve major issues such as having one of the lowest rankings in education, and one of the highest crime rates in the country.

Butler believes that the state can use money wisely instead of throwing money at problems and wants to manage natural resources in a sustainable manner while encouraging new industry development. To propose and implement effective solutions, Butler is running as an independent so she can serve the people, not the party.

Dr. Butler received her PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University.
