Sen. David Johnson, IA SD-1

David Johnson left the Republican Party after Donald Trump received the 2016 primary nomination and is now the only independent in Iowa's state legislature.

David Johnson is an independent representing Iowa's 1st Senate District. He has served in the legislature since 1999, first in the house of representatives, and since 2003, in the state senate.

Johnson was born and raised in West Branch, Iowa and is a graduate of Beloit College. Johnson is a former polar researcher, dairy farmer and award wining newspaper reporter, publisher, editor and owner.

In 2016, when Donald Trump received the Republican nomination, Senator Johnson received national attention for leaving his party and declaring his independence. He currently serves on the natural resources and and environment committee.

He is running for re-election in Iowa's first senate district as an independent. You can read more about his campaign here.
