Paul Jones, CO HD-59
Paul Jones is an Independent candidate from Southwest Colorado running for House District 59. He is a Colorado native, born down the road in Montrose.
Paul has dedicated his life to public service as a law enforcement officer, game warden and biologist. As a game warden, it was his responsibility to protect the wise use of the natural resources that previous generations had left for us, to defend our way of life, and leave our community a better place than we found it. Recently retiring, he wants to continue his service by bringing Southwest Colorado values to the State House.
Paul and his wife Kathy, a teacher, have been married for 24 years. They have lived in Gunnison since 1995 and raised two boys there. They worked hard to instill in them the values of hard work, honesty, and kindness for others. During this time, they have watched in disappointment as these same values have disappeared from public discourse in state and national politics.
Paul is running because he has had it with not being represented -- the political bickering, the inability of politicians to come together and solve problems. Instead of representing their constituents to make lives better all Coloradans, career politicians pander to party leadership, special interests and corporations.
Like many Americans, Paul’s family recently went through a major medical crisis. Their eldest son was diagnosed with two autoimmune disorders just as he left for college. On top of the monumental expense of higher education, they suddenly had to spend almost a quarter of their annual income on medical expenses. Without the help of family and friends, their family would have been forced to choose between paying for his education or his health care. Paul knows this is not the American Dream and that decent health insurance should give people security that they are not going to go bankrupt due to medical expenses.
Paul’s mother was a lifelong Democrat and his father was a lifelong Republican. Paul has always been a lifelong Independent. He’s running as an Independent because his parents taught him that when something is broken, you must take responsibility and work together to fix it. Paul believes the best way to fix our broken political system right now is to elect a Southwest Colorado Independent who won’t be beholden to political parties or special interest groups. He’s committed to being a practical, common-sense leader for our community. Southwestern Colorado has long been ignored by Denver politics and his campaign aims to stop that.
Paul aims to bring honor back to the political process. Paul knows that people may have different ideas and approaches to solving problems, but believes we can commit ourselves to finding the best solutions and improve the lives of people across the state.
