Some prominent and powerful Republican senators are facing primary challenges from their own right flank. According to a New York Times article, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, and Lamar Alexander are all facing potential primary challenges from Tea Party candidates.
This is a real problem, whether you like Graham, McConnell and Alexander or not. As long as every Republican politician has to be looking over his or her RIGHT shoulder, it is going to be nearly impossible to forge any meaningful political compromises. And none of our major challenges--fiscal, environmental, or social--can be tackled without compromise.
Without some kind of political counterweight in the center--a place where sane Republicans can find safe harbor--the Tea Party is going to do serious damage to this country, even if they never accomplish anything legislatively.
