STATEMENT: Unite America calls attack on democracy "unconscionable"
As a number of congressional Republicans stage a last-minute, unconstitutional attempt to overturn the results of the Electoral College, Unite America, a nonpartisan election reform organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Nick Troiano:
"It is undemocratic and unconscionable for any member of Congress to object to the counting of electoral votes in an effort to overturn the outcome of this election based on dishonest and discredited claims about widespread voter fraud.
More than 159 million Americans cast ballots in the 2020 elections. All 50 states and the District of Columbia certified their results. The Electoral College transmitted its 538 votes to Congress.
Today, it is Congress’ job to count those votes, officially declare our next President and Vice President, and allow for a peaceful transfer of power at noon on January 20th. Congress has counted votes 58 times before in our country’s history, in accordance with our Constitution.
Americans’ confidence in the integrity of our elections is necessary to sustain our Constitutional system of self-government. Acting to undermine our elections for personal and partisan gain is an assault on our Democratic Republic, and there is no place in our politics for it."
