John Vihstadt, Arlington County Board

John Vihstadt is running for re-election to the Arlington County Board in Northern Virginia. John’s run for the County Board is backed by over 30 years of school and community activism and a strong record of independent leadership during his first term in office.

An attorney, John has served his community, state and country through a number of institutions throughout his life. Just some examples include serving as President of the Yorktown High School Parent Teacher Association, president of his civic association, and on the Arlington Planning, Aging, and Housing Commissions.

In Virginia, he worked closely with the General Assembly and Governor to secure authority to hire an independent county auditor, and he pushed to implement a financial waste, fraud, and abuse hotline. In his first term he also led efforts to reform the county’s budget process, expand the Capital BikeShare program through commercial advertising to raise revenue, prioritize continued investment in public schools and increase bandwidth to improve the community’s infrastructure.

Vihstadt lives with his wife Mary, with whom he has raised two children, who are graduates of Arlington Public Schools.  John received both a B.A. degree and J.D. degree from the University of Nebraska.
