Tell us about yourself: who you are, where you're from, etc.

I'm a Colorado native who's lived in Austin, TX for the past 18 years. I work in state government. I found my way to the Centrist Project because of years of frustration with the Republican/Democratic duopoly.

What does being a "Centrist" mean to you, and why did you get involved?

Being a Centrist means not feeling forced to select a candidate who's the lesser of two evils. I'm liberal on some issues, conservative on others, but extremist on none. The duopoly only fields candidates who satisfy activist bases which are no longer within the political mainstream. Working for a strong centrist movement is the only way to keep America from falling victim to governmental paralysis or the authoritarianism of either extreme.

What is a policy issue you are passionate about and why?

Clean, cheap renewable energy. It's not only essential to keeping the planet livable, but should also be a national defense priority. We risk finding ourselves at the mercy of a hostile power that discovers the key to producing and delivering cheap and clean renewable energy on a mass scale before we do.

How do you think we can unite our country and fix our politics?

I think a centrist movement capable of providing a viable alternative to the far left and far right is the only way to move the country forward. Once we have a workable government, people will be wary of ideologues incapable of compromise and cooperation, and marginalize them so that will they have little influence in the country's political life.

Anything else you'd like to add?

If Trump's election has taught us anything, it's that people hunger for candidates who are unfiltered and clear about where they stand. When people ask questions of candidates and politicians, they want and deserve a concise and honest response, even if it's not always what they want to hear. People are fed up with filtered, nuanced, parsed and rehearsed answers choreographed by handlers and focus groups. But directness doesn't have to go hand in hand with vulgar demagoguery. Honest answers given respectfully will usually be received respectfully.
