WHAT DOES BEING A "CENTRIST" MEAN TO YOU, AND WHY DID YOU GET INVOLVED?
The centrist ideal in my opinion is the ability to use good judgement and discernment on every political issue. Being a centrist is also the ability to see past the rhetoric used by both major parties and recognize that each party has some elements of good. Unfortunately, due to the high amount of partisanship, it is often impossible for government to agree on sensible legislation. Although raised in a Republican household, I was turned off by the divisive 2016 election and I saw different ways of doing things when I was in Germany. I explored different parties and movements until I found the Centrist Project, which supported my main beliefs.
WHAT IS A POLICY ISSUE YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT AND WHY?
Although many issues are pressing, the most important is that our nation needs to be investing in the future. This means that the nation's outdated infrastructure needs to be updated, from the highways to the antiquated power grid. Education also needs to be reformed to supply the labor and civic needs of the country. Investing in the future means equipping society with the necessary tools to compete in a 21st century economy.
HOW DO YOU THINK WE CAN UNITE OUR COUNTRY AND FIX POLITICS?
The most important aspect that needs to change in our politics is the outrageous amount of spending it takes to be elected. Most everyone agrees that money is a corrupting influence and that campaign finance reform needs to be enacted. Another reform I would like to see is ranked voting instead of the first-past-the-post voting system that is currently being used. This would enable people to be represented more proportionally.
